I've just glanced through the Latin-Thread and I'm glad to end up here among people who have chosen to write in a language I like much better. I'd even say I love English, I enjoy reading, hearing and speaking it, and in my eighth year of learning this lovely language I dare say that I'm good enough to prove my skills. I've started reading authentical English texts three years ago and my very first "Buchvorstellung" was about an half German, half English book in the German class. I've never seen a book like that one again since then and I think it's really interesting to mix languages like that, because you have to change between the "Language-Modes" while reading and train your understanding very well.
Last year I had to hold a "book-report" (as my current English teacher prefers to say) about "Uncle Tom's cabin" and it took me more than half an hour to tell the class everything I had prepared. This year everyone in the course has to present one novel and the speaking-time is limited to 15 minutes.
In the lower classes our teachers usually speak German. I'm in the lucky situation to have a teacher who is determined to talk only in English in the lessons, save for translations or German names. It sounds quite funny, because his English is flawless and very elegant, and when he suddenly says a few words in German, it's like he'd speak a foreign language.
I'm looking forward to the day when our class test will be returned to us, because the translation was really demanding and I want to know if I succeeded in following the strict rules of translation our teacher told us. "A good translation cares for the reader's experience of the translation to be the same as that of the original."
As for reading English novels I can suggest anyone to try the trial.
Last summer our family had an Irish student as guest for three weeks. He was supposed to improve his German, but in the end it was me who improved her English. Next summer there will be trips to London and Dublin for the students in my year and I'll try to get a place in the plane to Ireland, though it is deadly expensive.

I have had English lessons vor eight years. For eight years I've been told "Answer in a full sentence!"
Again and again! "Answer in a full sentence!"
Last month I began to study computer science at a Fachhochschule. Now I have to learn a technical english. And now I mustn't answer in a full sentence anymore. I am not allowed to anymore! It would be a mistake, because "it's not natural. Nobody does it." (By the way, my current English teacher is a native English speaker).
But I'm used to do, now. I can't stop it so easily.

BOS stands for BerufsOberSchule.

BOS is the Shortcut for Berufs Ober Schule. I'm going to make there my Abitur. After that i can study.
The Only Difficult thing in English is that they have so many meanings for one Word.
But the grammar is very Easy.
and Yes i Know that normaly all words in English start with small letters and not with Capital letters.

Im often very sad, because our education isn`t good. Instead of speaking english more than 3 or even 2 lessons in the week, we sit 2 hours and draw silly pictures of our classroom or another pupils...
I know, that 'allgemeinbildungs' means, that you have to learn thing you are not interessted in... but: The state is a very bad man, who wants to penetrate the pupils with evil monsters (teachers... )

Maybe you underestimate your talents. I can only speak for myself of course, but I think I have some experience with those things... Harry Potter is actually not as easy a read as many people think. If you can read - and better, understand - HP, you will in most probability be able to read and unsterstand most Star Wars novels as well. You ought to try it sometime.
'occupation' in German means 'Besetzung' or, more often, 'Beschäftigung'... I do not know the correct translation, but if I'd had to guess I'd say 'vocational school' (ok, I admit, I looked it up
). I agree. That's the main thing.
I'm not a supporter of the whole marks system anyway, not the way it's practised today.
I think you're wrong
. I don't know any language with so big a vocabulary, so many different dialects, so many exceptions to the rules. There are certain aspects in which English is easier than German, but they don't outnumber the aforementioned things (imho).

maybe but i think for a foreign Language is english very easy then a another one like french or spainish.
Especially Spanish is a very easy-to-learn language (I've heard).
And as to English... well, look at the majority of the posts in this thread. It's very difficult to get the right 'feeling' when to say what in which way.

I'm also learning spanish but for me is spanish more difficult then english.

This idear with in the English Thread is really very good. I´ve learned English in school for four years and I liked it very much.
I try to speak some words every day for practise.

In my opinion, spanish, italy and so on, are very more easier than english or frensh. Spanish and italy are very "ähnlich", and the grammar is very easy. the only thing you have to learn really new is vocubalary and the aspect, that you can forget the persons

It was "You speak good English! - Nein, nur ein bisschen..." from Emer O'Sullivan and Dietmar Rösler. The book is full of sentences like "It could be worse - oder?", the story is aimed at teenagers, but I don't think it was a waste of time to read it.
My teacher would be pleased to hear that, but I think he already knows. We're his 15th or so advanced course and sometimes he reminds me of Ben Kenobi with the self-esteem of Han Solo.
I'd say it is delighting.

Actually, this thread is a very good idea! My English is pretty bad because I'm lack of practice. So lets start here.
I was in England (London) for two times. The first time was in 1991 with my school class. The second time was after I got my 'general qualification for university entrance' (Abitur).
Because of my brother who lifes in the US, I was also two times in San Francisco, CA and once in New York City. This country is fascinating. Has anybody else been in the US?

Now I write with my bad english one or two sentences. My best way to learn englisch is when I read star wars books in english. But at work I must speak english often, so that I learn every day more and more. But I understand english when I see in words on the screen or on the paper if when I hear english. I don't know why it is, but it is a very manko.
