The character I had the most fun with was Vergere, because she's so extreme. Vergere was willing to torture Jacen for =ages= in the expectation it would make him an enlightened being! Wow! At last, a =good= guy who believes the ends justify the means! (Though this depends on your definition of "good," I suppose.)
I got to do a lot with Vergere, like explaining what she's actually been up to all this time, and why. She explains the philosophical basis for her actions, and she and Luke shrink-wrap each other's brains. It was fun.
Ha! (Wobei 'approve' mir fast zu wenig ist...)George Lucas indeed approved the storyline for NJO.
Die einzige Lösung des Problems, die ich mir vorstellen kann, ist Klonen + Gedächtnis, aber ich hoffe, dass kein Autor im EU darauf zurück greift...Chissdude, the military is one of the triad of problems the New Republic has to deal with in order to turn around the war with the Yuuzhan Vong. Material losses in the war aren't that important--- they have the resources of a whole galaxy to draw on and can replace all that fairly easily. The critical losses are in experienced personnel. They can be replaced, too, but they'll be replaced by rookies, with no combat experience, who would be easy meat for the invaders. So the real problem isn't losses in ships and facilities, but in people.
I won't say how it's done, but by the end of DW, the problem is solved.
The other elements of the New Republic's triad of trouble are the political problem (not only getting a government, but getting one that the worlds and the military will trust), and (for the Jedi) the philosophical problem posed by the very existence of the Yuuzhan Vong.
I don't want to go into too many details about DESTINY'S WAY, but the Imperial Remnant plays a part in the book, yes. There's a very crucial conversation between Admiral Pellaeon and Leia. In Sean's trilogy the Remnant is important, too.
I don't want to say who lives or dies. Bad to spoil the suspense.
Eieiei...Kyp Durron? Heh. Read the book.
Kashyyyk? As far as fleet groups go, I don't think anybody quite knows where they went. In DW I had Kre'fey's group staging out of Kashyyyk, while Garm Bel Iblis was commanding forces at Fondor. I believe I sent Wedge Antilles to Kuat after the Battle of Borleias, but it's been a while and I don't remember for sure.
I really couldn't fix that in DW, because it wasn't in my mandate to produce a new constitution for the Republic, but I did rationalize the executive somewhat and put a group in charge who are willing to look at the situation in a different light. And at the end I point the way to a new political arrangement, though it will be up to other authors to follow through. Suffice it to say that by the end of NJO things should be somewhat different.
Nun, halb zumindest...In DW I addressed mainly Luke's philosophical issues, having to do with the implications of the existence of the Yuuzhan Vong. If the Force is life, and the Vong are outside of the Force, where does that put them?
*blödesGrinsenaufsetz*I also found Luke's arguments opposing action against the Vong to be, shall we say, less than convincing. I decided he had to have a =real= reason, one he wasn't telling anybody. So I had him deal with =that.=
Die Diskussion hatten wir ja gerade erst.By way of further whetting your appetites, I could mention that one of the aspects of Luke's journey in DW has to do with the place of the Jedi in the New Republic. The Jedi have been encountering a lot of hostility in the NJO, but for the most part haven't thought about why that's so. =They= know they're good guys, so why do people hate them?
What Luke realizes is that this mistrust isn't irrational. The Jedi are a self-appointed elite who take upon themselves the right to interfere in police, military, and diplomatic matters, often using violence. They use government funds, but are accountable to no one in government. Their very existence is profoundly un-democratic. And the last time they were given free rein, they gave the galaxy Darth Vader.
Luke realizes this, and he acts to change things.
Wie will er das in 400 Seiten unterbringen...?DW is one of the SW books with a cast of thousands. Luke has perhaps the most conspicuous arc, but Jaina's is also important, and Jacen makes what is perhaps the most important decision in the book. Plus Mara, Leia, and Han are more than just spear carriers, they all have vital contributions.
And so does Shimrra, who has some important scenes now that he is installed in his new capital. DarthDave is correct in that he's been kept deliberately offstage till now, a titanic menace looming ever closer. In DW you get to see the God-Chosen himself, in all his massive glory.
The only thing I am disappointed with is the revelation that Jag/Jaina will not be happening.
For the trilogy that follows DW, you'll have to bug Sean. I know that part of the story involves Zonama Sekot, but the other elements won't make sense until you've read DW, anyway.
Ebenfalls Ha!

??????????????????????
I don't want people to read too much into my cryptic remarks re Jag and Kyp and Jaina. Nothing about their relationships are actually =resolved= in DW: you'll have to wait for another book for that.
I never actually bring Shawnkyr on stage, out of compassion for other writers in the series who may need her one place or another, and who would curse me for all eternity if I put her in an inconvenient part of the galaxy.
The original title for DW was NEW JEDI ORDER HARDBACK #4. While this got most of the necessary information across, I decided it was a little cold, and retitled the work DESTINY'S ROAD. Feedback indicated that "road" wasn't a science fiction-y enough word, so I suggested DESTINY'S HYPERSPACE BYPASS. For some reason this one didn't fly either, and DESTINY'S WAY was decided upon, with apologies to Marcel Proust.
