It's already known that the Walt Disney Company and LucasFilm are currently working on a new Star Wars film trilogy but a recent report states that another film series for the popular franchise is simultaneously being developed.
Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) is writing the screenplay for the highly anticipated next installment of the Star Wars franchise. No story details have been revealed, but it's confirmed Star Wars: Episode VII will take place after the events of Return of the Jedi. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are all rumored to be reprising their roles from the first trilogy. Although it's director has not been announced yet, plans are for the film to hit theaters in 2015 following Marvel Studios/Disney's The Avengers 2. Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan have signed on to write the additional episodes of the new trilogy.
Now, Vulture reports that director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) has been brought in to develop a separate film series within the Star Wars franchise:
"He is..developing a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm that is set within the series’ galaxy, though parallel to the next trilogy. It will be an as-yet-untitled Jedi epic loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding knights and their iconic lightsabers.
"It’s not clear just where Snyder’s untitled Jedi film would fall within the Star Wars chronology, but one insider expects it will not be considered part of the “numbered” episodes, but rather a stand-alone film set sometime post–Episode VI events."

Vulture reported on this surprising, and interesting development.
According to their sources, Snyder’s film will not be a numbered Star Wars episode and would be made sometime after Star Wars Episode VII. It would also take place in that timeline, post-Return of the Jedi. This marks the third name rumored to be working on a Star Wars film that is not one of the traditional stories. (Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan before him.) Meanwhile, we still don’t have a director named for Episode VII.
