Actually I'd never measure my skill in English on those of an American. Because every pupil in sixth grade can reach that goal...
Americans are terribly lazy, they shorten up almost everything. And since they always seek to differ from Brits they change their grammar all the time in everyday speech. I've been reading a lot in American Forums and I can tell you, oh boy, the worst mistakes always came from the so called Native Speakers.
Just as Spaceball said: Don't worry, as long as they just get your meaning it's fully sufficient for a talk.
That's why you have to learn it the over-correct way in school, so you can decide what you say and in which style.

School has just begun ... time to reactivate the english speaking part of my brain *gg*. I read through the last pages of the topic yesterday evening and the question that appeared to me while reading was: Where the deuce did you learn english? Certainly not in school... at least not in mine
I had my first english lesson two days ago and it started with the explanation of passive (i'd say lower intermediate level *gg*) and the translation of "Die Aufgaben wurden gekonnt."
It would be an overstatement if i said that more than 20% of the pupils were able to solve the assignment.

PS: I am in the eleventh school - year what means, that there are only two years left for preparing the final exam. Info: I've never read an english novell in school.

Learning English in school is good for the basics . Everything else is a matter of training . I started training in the internet, with english message boards and with translating my fanfiction into English. Also, I'm reading all my books and watching all my movies only in English . Having English natives as friends in the web and talking to them via instant messengers also helps .

In my opinion, after 4 years school english, theres not much, what you can learn in school. Only some vocabulary, and speaking more fluend ...

Not really. It is also very helpful if you watch english movies (and I mean movies, not the Osbournes on MTV... there are masses of other words than F**k
) or if you read english books and magazines.

Yes, probably, you're right ... but I think to learn a language, you've to visit the country, of course, it isn't a disadvantage, to watch english movies, or ready english books. I do that sometimes, It helps you to understand the language ... not to speak it. And in my case understanding is not the problem ... it's speaking .. Actually, I can communicate but only with simple vocabulary at the moment, I'm out of training ... i've to get into it again ...

I've already started to read english books, watch english movies and to communicate with native speakers over ICQ. (It began with "Harry Potter and the Half - Blood Prince" ) That has improved my skills in written language and of course I know a lot more vocab now. But thats not enough for me
I want to speak more fluently. Considering my very poor english education it would be the best for me to visit an english speaking country. I thought of Malta... good weather, bikinis and the sea..
Has anybody ever done such a "language-learning trip"? (Whats the word for "Sprachreise"?)

I have now also decided to use this thread, too and I think it could be a lot of fun. I haven't studied all posts in here, so maybe somebody here can tell me a bit about the topics discutated here. And if someone needs a more or less competent English-speaking person, he or she can come confidentially to me; I'm making my {Abitur} also in English, so I think I should have at least a little bit knowledge about the English language. Well, I'm waiting for responses.
Et si quelqu'un veut parler un peu francais, je peut peut-être aider, même si mon francais n'est pas le meilleur. A bientôt.
